Caring about Employees: more than an annual event!

I just got off the phone with a friend I was making some holiday plans with.

Having finalized our plans we got talking about “stuff” and she mentioned that the managers in her office were doing the Christmas rounds, wandering about like best friends, wishing everyone well, shaking hands and offering hugs and the odd kiss.

The problem was, she informed me, that the managers in her company only ever seemed to interact “positively” with staff during the week before Christmas.  Many of the employees were very uncomfortable with this “fake we love and care about you crap” (a direct quote!).  It made them nervous.  It made them uncomfortable. And, it seems, the Christmas wish visits did little but reinforce the widely held belief among employers that management really didn’t care about them.

She also told me that through the previous week staff had spent endless hours chatting about their “hatred” of the pending visits.  And she knew that as the managers wandered by throughout the week the post visit period would be filled with even more chatter about the managers and how they just didn’t get things.

I could write on and on about this but don’t know that doing so would add little value to the point.  The message is rather a simple one:  Caring about the people who work with and for you each and every day of the year goes a long way towards building a positive workplace environment.  Doing so only on an annual basis …well, I’m sure you will find something to do with the lump of coal in your stocking!
